The group exists because a good product and a good company are not the same problem. Building software is one kind of work; incorporating, invoicing, handling contracts, keeping insurance current and staying on top of security is another. Holding the second at this level means a product can be built and tested on its merits, and only becomes a business of its own if it earns that.
What the businesses have in common is shape rather than market. Each is small, sells directly to the people who use it, and is run by a team close enough to its customers to change course quickly. They share engineering practice, security standards and back office, and almost nothing else. There is no group brand to live up to and no requirement to sell into each other.
New businesses get added when there is something worth running, not on a schedule. An idea that does not find customers gets stopped rather than carried, and the register on the homepage shows the current state honestly, including anything still being built.
